Soft Surroundings is searching for a self-driven,experienced Buyer, with a background in shoes, swim, jewelry and/or accessories, and a proven track record of results for our St. Louis headquarters.   • Exceed corporate sales and profit objectives by obtaining the most saleable merchandise with a soft hand (in keeping with our brand image) for our targeted customer, offering the greatest value and quality possible on a timely basis.
  • Obtain and/or design appropriate merchandise for targeted customer, resulting in gross sales demand and gross margin at or above plan.
  • Monitor overall market, fashion trends and competition.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of customer profile, plus past and current buying trends.
  • Assist in the development and execution of merchandise plans overall and for a specific area of responsibility.
  • Plan and execute the optimum market coverage to select and secure profitable catalog/retail offerings.
  • Participate in and organize appropriate selection meetings.
  • Negotiate prices, backup availability, advertising, co-op, exclusives and timely deliveries.
  • Establish optimum selling price point to achieve gross margin plans while maximizing sales.
  • Identify private label opportunities, working with the PL director on product development.
  • Communicate potential fit concerns to Technical Design on a timely basis to reduce return rates.
  • Work with the Technical Design department on quality and fit problems as requested.
  • Work with the Inventory Control Planners to secure complete and timely deliveries to reduce cancels and increase fill rates.
  • Work with the Inventory Control Planner to resolve vendor problems as requested.
  • Research and develop new vendor/resources interested in doing catalog/retail business.
  • Consistently shop the competition (both catalog and stores) to have a thorough understanding of competitive price points and trends.
  • Maintain good vendor communications and relations.
  • Secure accurate photography samples as needed.
  • Assist in the training and development of department clericals, assistants, and associate buyers where appropriate.
  • Assist in training sales center associates and retail training videos as required.
  • Travel on average one week per month.


  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree, fashion related marketplace knowledge and a general understanding of computers and computer software.
  • Requires problem solving, analyzing and reasoning skills.
  • Four or more years of prior buying experience preferably in a catalog or retail environment.
